The official currency of Guatemala is the Quetzal (GTQ), but US dollars are also widely accepted, especially in the tourism sector. Many accommodations, tours, and imported goods are often priced in dollars. Currency exchange can be done at airports, banks, and authorized exchange offices; rates and fees vary depending on location, so it's advisable to compare several places. ATMs are available and mostly accept Visa and Mastercard, but be aware of possible fees and daily withdrawal limits imposed by your card issuer. Tipping is customary, typically around 10% at restaurants, for hotel porters, and taxis. Since counterfeit bills can be an issue, choose well-lit and secure places for exchange and always check the bills you receive. Avoid carrying large amounts of local currency; keep only what you need handy for safety.
